The Shadow Play project by Howeler + Yoon Architecture brings innovation to downtown Phoenix by repurposing a traffic median into a vibrant public space at Roosevelt Row. This initiative aims to enhance pedestrian life and revitalize the streetscape, offering relief from the desert sun through strategically designed shade structures that resemble a public parasol on an urban scale.
Innovative Canopy Design
At the heart of Shadow Play’s design are clusters of shade structures that serve as a refuge from the intense sunlight. These structures are crafted from identical geometric modules made of steel plates, ensuring both thinness and structural rigidity. The arrangement of these modules creates a series of open cells suspended between vertical supports, forming an angular canopy that efficiently filters sunlight and casts shadows on the ground below.
