A Historic Evolution

Täby Torg Square symbolizes a significant milestone in the history of Täby, Sweden. Originally part of the Swedish “Million Programme” initiated in the 1960s to address housing shortages, the center of Täby lacked a communal space due to its suburban layout. However, with the dawn of the new millennium, Täby Municipality embarked on an urban densification strategy to cultivate a vibrant urban environment, culminating in the transformation of a parking lot near the Täby shopping mall into a dynamic square. This endeavor aimed to forge a new heart for Täby, embodying the area’s evolving identity.

The Concept: A Space of Opportunities

Polyform Architects envisioned Täby Torg as a “space of opportunities,” comprising six distinct zones tailored to various functions. From a serene seating square to a bustling market square and an expansive stage space, each zone offers diverse experiences. Notably, the water square boasts 120 synchronized water jets, forming Sweden’s largest water fountain. A cohesive barcode-pattern design unifies these zones, fostering connectivity while preserving their individual identities. Illumination plays a pivotal role, with over 500 lighting units illuminating the square, transforming it into an inviting urban oasis, especially during Sweden’s dark winter days.

Materiality and Functionality

The square’s design integrates a range of materials, including brushed white concrete tiles, natural stone, poured rubber, and cast iron, delineating each zone’s character and function. Large L-shaped light poles and black steel pavilions demarcate the boundary between the square and the parallel street, doubling as urban furniture and potential rental spaces for cafes or shops.

A Lighting Strategy for Flexibility

The lighting strategy is intricately tailored to enhance the square’s adaptability as a multifunctional space. Organized into six zones, the lighting accentuates each area’s purpose while harmonizing with the overall composition of the square. This comprehensive approach ensures that Täby Torg remains visually cohesive, offering dynamic scenarios to complement various activities and occasions throughout the day and year.

Today, Täby Torg Square spans 10,000 square meters, serving as a dynamic nexus for community engagement. From vibrant farmer’s markets to exhilarating rock concerts and leisurely summer days at the cafes, the square accommodates a myriad of activities.
