Urban Context

Skanderbeg Square in Skopje, Macedonia, emerges as a pivotal fragment of the winning proposal for its redevelopment. While Phases 1 and 2 stand completed, Phase 3 is currently underway, marking a significant stride in urban rejuvenation.

Architectural Concept

The primary aim of the project is to seamlessly integrate the elevated area above the boulevard into the fabric of public urban spaces, thereby enhancing both their qualitative and quantitative dimensions. Situated along the main pedestrian axis, Skanderbeg Square serves as a thematic nexus connecting Macedonia Square, the Stone Bridge, and the historic Old Bazaar. Its design ethos transcends mere functionality, envisaging a dynamic interplay between individual intimacy and collective engagement. The square, resembling an open hovering stage, fosters a diverse array of public events while accentuating panoramic vistas of the surrounding spatial tapestry. This hybrid space, a synthesis of built form and open expanse, redefines the conventional notion of a square, enriching the urban milieu of Skopje.

Material Plan

Material sincerity underpins the essence of Skanderbeg Square, with the arrangement of materials akin to a vibrant pigment collage. Structural elements maintain a minimalist aesthetic, devoid of superfluous adornment, thereby accentuating the raw beauty of the space. Greenery and water features further animate the ambiance, imbuing it with vitality and dynamism. Certain surfaces within the square serve as canvases for artistic interpretation, fostering a symbiotic relationship between built environment and creative expression.

Transformative Potential

Skanderbeg Square transcends its physical dimensions to become a vibrant arena of freedom and expression. Its open expanse fosters dialogue, solidarity, and cultural exchange, serving as a versatile platform for a myriad of activities. From concerts and outdoor performances to youth festivals and recreational pursuits, the square embodies adaptability, molding itself according to the evolving needs and aspirations of its users.

In essence, Skanderbeg Square emerges not merely as a static urban space, but as a dynamic canvas for collective imagination and societal interaction, epitomizing the symbiosis between architectural innovation and cultural vitality.
