A Glimpse of History

Brugge, often referred to as the ‘Venice of the North’, holds the prestigious title of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its picturesque old town, dating back to the Middle Ages, and the intricate network of canals define its unique charm. As one wanders through the city’s well-preserved streets, the scenic beauty of Brugge unfolds, offering a glimpse into its rich historical tapestry.

A Modern Intervention

In the context of TRIENNALE BRUGGE 2018, OBBA and Dertien12 embarked on a mission to infuse a touch of modernity into Brugge’s timeless landscapes. Their vision culminated in “The Floating Island” – a pavilion designed to disrupt the traditional boundaries of the city’s canals and beckon visitors to the waterfront. By reimagining the canal as more than just a scenic backdrop but as an immersive space for contemplation and leisure, OBBA sought to enrich the visitor experience and foster deeper connections with the environment.

Design Elements

Crafted from a combination of pontoons, metal frames, deck plates, pillars, and rope curtains, the pavilion exudes a sense of fluidity and dynamism. The interplay of light and shadow, facilitated by the rope curtains, creates an atmosphere of ambiguity, blurring the distinction between open and enclosed spaces. As visitors traverse the linear trail, they encounter various seating areas and installations, each offering a unique vantage point to appreciate the surrounding landscape.

A Haven for Reflection and Joy

“The Floating Island” offers a multitude of experiences tailored to the needs of visitors. Whether basking in the sun on tilted ropes, lounging in rope hammocks, or indulging in moments of quiet contemplation, there’s something for everyone. The pavilion encourages interaction, playfulness, and introspection, inviting visitors to engage with their surroundings in meaningful ways.

Bridging Life and Art

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, “The Floating Island” serves as a catalyst for blurring the boundaries between daily life and art. By seamlessly integrating into the fabric of Brugge, the pavilion breathes new life into familiar landscapes, transforming the canal into a dynamic space for communal engagement. Through this intervention, OBBA and Dertien12 have succeeded in fostering a deeper sense of connection between the city and its inhabitants, reimagining Brugge as a vibrant hub of creativity and contemplation.
