Nestled in Karnal, part of the NCR (National Capital Region) in India, the House Under Shadows stands as a beacon of sustainable living amidst nature’s embrace. Spanning 1672 sq.m, this residence is strategically designed to harmonize with its surroundings and epitomize sustainable architecture.

Sustainable Living Vision

The client’s vision was clear – to create a sustainable haven that blends seamlessly with nature. Inspired by traditional Indian architecture and the architectural elements of the historic Noor Mahal in Karnal, the design embodies a zero-energy approach, emphasizing harmony with the environment.

Design and Layout

The residence comprises two single-floor units seamlessly connected by a common façade and a double roof structure. Mirroring each other, the units feature chowk-inspired courtyards that act as heatsinks, promoting cross ventilation and natural light. The layout ensures fluid movement between spaces, fostering a sense of openness and social cohesion.

Sustainable Strategies

Central to the design is the double roof canopy, crafted with FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) in a Voronoi pattern. This innovative structure reduces solar radiation by 50%, minimizing heat gain and cooling loads. Additionally, stone-clad walls, vertical greens, and a pool act as heat sinks, further enhancing thermal performance and energy efficiency.

Material Palette and Details

Local materials with low embodied carbon are employed, including Gwalior mint stone for walls and natural wood for ceilings. Aluminum glazing ensures floor-to-ceiling windows, maximizing natural light ingress. The interior décor complements the earthy palette, creating a cohesive aesthetic that celebrates nature.

Conclusion

House Under Shadows redefines sustainable living, seamlessly blending traditional Indian elements with modern design principles. With its innovative architecture, energy-efficient features, and commitment to sustainability, this residence exemplifies the epitome of eco-friendly living in harmony with nature.
