Introduction
Laila Architecture presents a minimalist oasis in the heart of Tel-Aviv with the Iceberg Apartment, characterized by natural tones and wooden elements. Designed by Architect Talia Davidi, this 100 square meter apartment features pale birch plywood, local terrazzo tiles, and natural lime plaster, creating a serene haven in central Tel-Aviv.
Homage to Modernist Architecture
Situated within a typical residential building dating back to 1961, the square-shaped apartment underwent a renovation that pays homage to the local 1960s modernist architecture. Utilizing ecological and contemporary materials, the design embraces a minimalist aesthetic while preserving the spirit of the era.
Light and Serene Space
The design ethos revolves around creating a light and serene environment, ideal for the young-at-heart retired clients. The space is characterized by exposed light wood carpentry, locally sourced terrazzo tiles, and natural lime plaster, all contributing to a soft and inviting atmosphere.
Integration of Outdoor Spaces
To combat the harsh Israeli summer sun, the original balconies were reopened according to the original 1960s plan. This not only provides the clients with space for gardening but also enhances natural ventilation and daylighting throughout the apartment.
The Wooden Iceberg
A central feature of the design is an 8-meter-long double-sided carpentry piece, affectionately dubbed the “wooden iceberg.” This wooden partition serves as both a private-public divider and a functional element within the space. Clad in sand-hued terrazzo on one side and white terrazzo on the other, it moderates light and delineates zones within the apartment.
Multi-Functional Design
The angular carved section of the iceberg facing the dining and living room serves as a display area and hidden bar. Meanwhile, storage is cleverly integrated into the private side of the partition. Additionally, a parallel 8-meter multi-functional seat complements the iceberg, serving various purposes such as dining seating, shelving, and a built-in sofa.
Conclusion
With its meticulous attention to detail and thoughtful integration of natural materials, the Iceberg Apartment by Laila Architecture offers a modern retreat infused with warmth and serenity. By blending contemporary design elements with nods to the past, this space epitomizes minimalist elegance while providing a comfortable and functional living environment for its occupants.
