Project Overview

Kuanzhai Alley, originally constructed during the Qing Dynasty’s Kangxi period in Chengdu, China, comprises three streets intersected by numerous alleys. These streets, embodying historical significance, were named “Kuan Alley” (Wide Alley), “Zhai Alley” (Narrow Alley), and “Jing Alley” (Well Alley) during the Republic of China period. Today, Kuanzhai Alley stands as a vibrant commercial and cultural hub, with its distinct streetscape offering a glimpse into Chengdu’s past. Adjacent to Jing Alley, lies a traditional western-Sichuan residential structure, serving as the site for the % Arabica café project.

Design Concept

The design philosophy of % Arabica café is rooted in the notion of experiencing the world through coffee, aligning with Chengdu’s laid-back lifestyle and the lively ambiance of Kuanzhai Alley. Transforming the café into a communal space, we aimed to capture the essence of urban culture, providing visitors with a place to connect and unwind. By seamlessly integrating the alley’s vibrant atmosphere into the café’s design, we curated a dynamic environment that reflects both the brand’s identity and the spirit of Chengdu.

Spatial Characteristics

Upon assessing the site, we restored the architecture’s original layout, removing a glass roof added by the previous owner. This restoration, accompanied by the removal of black paint from timber columns, revived the structure’s authentic character. The courtyard was transformed into a serene white pool, enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass walls to maximize natural light penetration. This transparent design fosters a sense of spatial fluidity, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Embracing Tradition with Modernity

Despite sacrificing retail space by removing the glass roof, we prioritized creating a seamless transition between the interior and exterior. The introduction of bar seating around the courtyard encourages social interaction while maintaining a sense of privacy. The interior design incorporates traditional elements such as old grey brick flooring, juxtaposed with modern accents, epitomizing the fusion of past and present.

Fostering Urban Vitality

The café’s layout, including a modern white bar counter and a looped indoor street, evokes the bustling streets of Chengdu. Here, patrons can freely engage in various activities, mirroring the lively urban life of old Chengdu. Our design philosophy emphasizes not only visual aesthetics but also the harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and culture, making % Arabica Kuanzhai Alley a testament to the vitality of urban spaces.

Continual Dialogue

Throughout the renovation process, we engaged in a continuous dialogue with the site and its history. % Arabica Kuanzhai Alley serves as a reflection of Chengdu’s rich cultural heritage and a celebration of its vibrant urban life. This ongoing dialogue underscores our commitment to creating spaces that resonate with the essence of their surroundings while embracing modernity.
