Introduction
Located in Seongsu-dong, Seoul, the ‘Episode Seongsu 101’ is a co-living housing brand developed by SK D&D. Joongho Choi Studio was tasked with designing strategies for residential spaces and community lounges within the Episode.
Lounge Design
The Episode lounge prioritizes versatility and flexibility to facilitate communication and interaction among residents and non-residents alike. The design approach focused on creating an efficient environment where people can share their lives actively. This led to the development of three key design elements.
Space of Interaction
The lounge features a spacious open area with minimal wall fixtures, enabling diverse functions. From a cafe & bar to a small studio for artists or a stage for performers, residents can engage in various community activities, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
Space that Transforms
Two elements facilitate the lounge’s transformation for different events. Firstly, a wall system allows for easy mood and function changes by replacing graphic elements. Secondly, portable furniture with attached casters enables flexible zoning adjustments, promoting dynamic communication and interaction.
Unexpected Space
By merging elements of street culture with the lounge environment, a unique experience is created. Drawing inspiration from the communal nature of public spaces, the design combines the ordinary with the boldness of the streets, offering a distinctive and ubiquitous experience.
Room Design
To enhance city living and accommodate diverse lifestyles, three key ideas were implemented in the room design. Firstly, a furniture system incorporating IKEA’s accessories provides customizable styling options. Secondly, open-end vanities blur the boundaries between spaces, promoting multi-functionality. Lastly, a rental service allows tenants to personalize their living spaces with rented furniture.
