In 2021, architect Toti Semerano embarked on a remarkable project known as Stella Maris, a hypogeal intervention to create a meditative space within a residential complex catering to guests with disabilities and their families. Nestled within a lush pine forest overlooking the Adriatic Sea, the chapel and cloister blend seamlessly into the natural landscape, offering a serene sanctuary for contemplation.

Design Concept

The terrain gradually rises from the darkness of the pine forest to reveal a breathtaking vista of the sea. Stella Maris is situated on a large dune, creating a clearing amidst the forest where the built space unfolds. The chapel and cloister are centered around a sacred space accessible only from within the chapel itself. A crypt bathed in morning light serves as the focal point, with movable walls allowing the chapel to expand into a larger liturgical space when needed.

Architectural Features

Stone plays a pivotal role in the design, with high walls crafted to appear as if hewn from a single block. Movable walls and deliberate use of light create an atmosphere of tranquility and reverence. The design incorporates elements of the natural environment, with a “botanical” approach that seeks to preserve the surrounding pinewood while harmonizing the built structures with their surroundings.

Material Selection

Materials were chosen with careful consideration for their aesthetic and environmental impact. Exposed concrete was mixed with inert earths and oxides to create a textured surface, while hand-made bricks were tinted to match the natural hues of the pine bark. Santafiora stone, prized for its versatility and color range, was used for flooring and cladding, blending seamlessly with the landscape.

Conclusion

Stella Maris represents not only a physical structure but also a philosophical exploration of architectural quality and environmental stewardship. Through meticulous design and thoughtful material selection, Toti Semerano has created a timeless space that honors both the natural beauty of its surroundings and the spiritual needs of its visitors.
