In 2022, waiwai architects unveiled the Mosque of Reflection in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, redefining the conventional role of mosques within urban environments. Led by architect Wael Al Awar, the project seeks to transform the mosque into a multifunctional space that fosters community engagement while maintaining its sacred significance.
Context and Design Philosophy
Located amidst Dubai’s bustling cityscape near the Coca-Cola Arena, the Mosque of Reflection stands as an oasis of spirituality and tranquility. Inspired by traditional Arabian mosque architecture, the design prioritizes communal interaction alongside worship. Retaining the original mosque structure, the façade is adorned with a reflective glossy pastel green finish, symbolizing serenity and modernity.
Integration of Traditional and Contemporary Elements
A notable addition to the mosque is the colonnaded arcade, known as the riwaq, which encircles the prayer space in a circular configuration. Unlike conventional mosque layouts, the riwaq features wide arches that beckon visitors from all directions. Perforated white metal panels allow natural light to permeate the space, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. The riwaq’s white tile flooring enhances the sense of openness and connectivity.
Establishing Community Spaces
The sahn, or courtyard, serves as a focal point for community engagement, featuring palm trees, water features, and seating areas for reflection and congregation. Symbolizing the intersection of faith and urban life, the sahn embodies a space where community connections are nurtured. Two minarets, clad in white perforated metal, house wind turbines, contributing to sustainable energy initiatives.
Interior Sanctity and Simplicity
Upon entering the main prayer hall, visitors are greeted by a transitional space that maintains continuity with the mosque’s exterior aesthetic. Inside, the prayer hall, or haram, is characterized by simplicity and minimalism. The carpet flooring, adorned with alternating shades of green, delineates prayer rows, while gold accents embellish the ceiling above the central prayer area. Calligraphic Quranic verses adorn the ceiling, culminating in the mihrab, which indicates the direction of Mecca for prayer.
