Designed by Oh Jongsang, this 50-year-old chapel underwent a transformation that balanced the need for modernization with the preservation of its cherished heritage.
Honoring Tradition
At the heart of the renovation lay a deep respect for the chapel’s history and character. Despite the challenges posed by leaking roofs and inadequate insulation, Jongsang recognized the intrinsic value of certain elements, such as the aged stone walls and the majestic fir tree that graced the site. These features, imbued with warmth and memories, were deemed integral to the chapel’s identity and were thus preserved as a tribute to its past.
Blending Simplicity and Elegance
The architectural vision for Papo Church embraced a harmonious blend of simplicity and elegance. Clad in white and gray, the exterior walls exude a sense of purity and serenity, complemented by a dark achromatic roof that stands in stark contrast against the lush green backdrop of the surrounding forest. The slender silhouette of the 350-square-meter building, spanning 35 meters, was strategically designed to integrate seamlessly into the expansive landscape, allowing for the creation of diverse outdoor spaces that enhance the overall experience.

Inside, the use of exposed concrete and bricks, coupled with strategically placed windows, bathes the interior in soft, diffused light, creating a tranquil sanctuary for worship and reflection.
