Maximizing Natural Light
One of the primary challenges faced by the architects was to ensure ample natural light within the underground structure of the seminary. Recognizing the importance of a well-lit and pleasant environment for scholarly pursuits, the design focused on innovative ways to bring light into the space.
Sunken Patios and High Windows
To address the need for natural illumination, the architects incorporated sunken patios and high windows strategically placed to maximize the ingress of sunlight. These design elements not only illuminate the interior but also create a sense of openness and connection to the outside world.
Enhancing the Study Atmosphere
Central to the design is the use of floor-to-ceiling wooden bookshelves that wrap around the interior walls of the central space. Beyond their functional role in housing scholarly texts, these bookshelves contribute to the ambiance of the Beit Midrash, evoking a sense of reverence and scholarly pursuit.
Visual Connectivity and Privacy
In keeping with religious customs, the architects integrated a perforated and folded metal partition to divide spaces for men and women within the seminary. Serving as a symbolic “veil,” this partition maintains visual connectivity while respecting the need for privacy and separation.
Celebrating Tradition and Heritage
The main entrance gate of the seminary serves as a symbolic link to ancient scriptures and traditions. Constructed entirely from three-dimensional words taken from religious texts, the gate celebrates the seminary’s presence in the public space while honoring its cultural heritage.
