In 2022, architecten|en|en unveiled the De Utrecht Cemetery Pavilion in Lage Mierde, the Netherlands, as part of the De Utrecht estate. Led by architect Joost Verbeek, the project is a testament to the growing trend of natural burial, championed by landscape architect Joyce Sengers, who envisioned a place that harmonizes with the natural cycle of life.
A Natural Sanctuary
The De Utrecht Cemetery Pavilion offers a serene retreat nestled within the tranquil landscape of the estate. Comprising three pavilions arranged around a central square, the ensemble serves as a warm and inviting sanctuary for visitors. Each pavilion serves a distinct purpose, including storage, restroom facilities, and information dissemination about natural burial practices.
Blending Tradition with Modernity
Drawing inspiration from local barn architecture, the pavilions pay homage to the agricultural heritage of the surrounding area. Their asymmetrical roof constructions and use of larch trees evoke a sense of rustic charm while seamlessly integrating into the natural environment. The pavilions are built from locally sourced materials, including larch trees felled during a January storm in 2020, aligning with the principles of sustainability and circularity.
Sustainable Design Elements
The pavilions feature innovative design elements aimed at maximizing sustainability. Solar panels discreetly integrated into the roof provide renewable energy, while inner walls lined with clay and ceilings clad in thuja wood contribute to acoustic comfort. Local materials, such as wool sourced from a nearby shepherd, further enhance the eco-friendly ethos of the project.
Harmonizing with Nature
With facades adorned with vertical larch planks and roofs clad in halved round beams, the pavilions seamlessly blend with their natural surroundings. The design encourages a symbiotic relationship with nature, exemplified by the presence of bats inhabiting the structures shortly after completion.
Fostering Community and Connection
Beyond its functional role, the De Utrecht Cemetery Pavilion serves as a gathering place for the community, providing a tranquil setting for reflection and remembrance. By embracing the principles of natural burial and sustainable design, the pavilion offers a timeless sanctuary where visitors can connect with nature and honor the cycle of life.
