Nestled within the Alto de São João cemetery in Lisbon, Portugal, CASA DO PESSOAL serves as a sanctuary amidst the solemnity of death. Designed by COM/O atelier and completed in 2022, this structure has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving from a dilapidated building into a beacon of comfort and functionality for the cemetery workers.
A Building for Life Amidst Death
For decades, CASA DO PESSOAL had served as the changing rooms for crematorium workers and housed a workshop for maintaining various elements of the cemetery. However, the deteriorating condition of the existing building necessitated a redesign to provide better working conditions for its users. Inspired by the serene atmosphere of the cemetery and the picturesque views of the river Tagus, the architects sought to create a space that would offer respite from the daily encounters with death.
Revitalizing Existing Spaces
While respecting the structural integrity of the original building, the architects revamped the interiors and roof to improve functionality and comfort. The layout was reorganized to optimize space utilization, with service areas relocated to the main facades for easy access. Changing rooms and staff service areas were moved to the first floor, while the workshop and warehouse were situated on the ground floor. Additionally, a third floor was added to accommodate a staff service area with a kitchen and a terrace overlooking the river Tagus.
Harmonizing Old and New
The new intervention features a modern aesthetic with white tiles covering both the interior and exterior surfaces, distinguishing it from the original structure. Translucent glass doors and windows evoke the ambiance of steam baths, while transparent windows allow natural light to flood the interior spaces. A skylight between the changing rooms serves as a vertical connection between floors, adorned with blue glass reminiscent of stained glass windows found in the cemetery’s tombs.
In essence, CASA DO PESSOAL stands as a testament to architectural innovation, providing a haven of tranquility and comfort amidst the solemnity of the cemetery, offering solace to those who work within its walls.
